We Have Always Lived in the Castle - Shirley Jackson

This is like a demented Grey Gardens or something.

The plot is rather simplistic, so what basically gets you is the mood and atmosphere.  Like some of Jackson's other works, it considers the cost of rumor and gossip on a family.  Merricat lives in a house in a middle of a wood with her uncle and sister.  All the rest of her family died as the result of eating blackberries and sugar.

There is also a cat.

Nothing bad happens to the cat.

What happens when a cousin who thins there might be riches shows up?

Well, kinda what you would think and kinda not.

It is actually a wonderful story about how we get stories.  There is a movie coming out soon too.  With a really great bathtub scene.
