Buddenbrooks: The Decline of a Family - Thomas Mann, John E. Woods, T.J. Reed Operatic, saga like, and so German. Mann’s novel follows the lives of a member of German family which struggles to escape the grasp of fate once they have places their sensitive members in her hands. In many ways, the novel echoes on a more modern level the legends such as Segued, with the same swing in fortunes. The characters aren’t so much characters as types, and in many ways, Mann seems to have foreseen the desires that prompt us to watch various reality programs today. The Buddenbooks aren’t so much characters as they are symbols or types. We don’t really root for the character as so much anticipate what they are going to do and how they are going to do it. We shake our hand and applaud our ability to know what is going to happen. It’s like watching a version of Carmen or any well known opera. We know and that’s half the joy.
